The Riddle We Become

Margaret stood at the edge of the infinity pool, her martini sweating onto the limestone deck. Below, the lights of Phoenix bled into the desert darkness, a vast pool of artificial stars. Thirty years of marriage dissolved into the silence between them.

Arthur sat in the cabana, his silhouette against the sliding glass door like some modern sphinx—impenetrable, ancient, withholding answers to riddles she'd stopped asking years ago. The water lapped gently against the pool's edge, a rhythmic invitation to submerge, to let the chlorine silence everything.

"You're going to tell me tonight," she said, not turning around. "Or I'm walking into that water and never coming out."

The thunder had been building for hours. When lightning finally fractured the sky, it illuminated Arthur's face—gaunt, terrified, holding something she'd never seen in all their decades together. His hand trembled as he set down his drink.

"There's someone else," he said.

Margaret laughed, a dry, hollow sound. "I know, Arthur. I've known for two years."

The confession hung between them, suspended like breath before plunging into deep water.

"Then why stay?" he whispered.

"Because I wanted to see if you'd choose me." She turned finally, her mascara tracking through tears she hadn't felt fall. "I wanted to see if you'd become the man I married, or if you'd remain this—this creature of half-truths and safe silences."

Another flash of lightning, closer now. The pool reflected the storm in fractured pieces, beautiful and broken.

"I never stopped loving you," Arthur said, and she almost believed him.

"Love isn't enough," she said, stepping to the water's edge. "Not when you've forgotten how to be seen."

She didn't jump. She simply walked back to the cabana, gathered her purse, and left him there with his riddles and his storm. Some sphinxes don't deserve to be solved. Some love stories end not with drama but with the quiet recognition that you've become strangers who share a history, nothing more.
