The Riddle of Us

Maya watched him across the dinner table, his face illuminated by the glow of his iPhone. Another email, another emergency at the startup that was consuming him piece by piece. She'd seen this transformation before—the slow erosion of intimacy by the relentless tide of ambition. Three years together, and somehow they'd become strangers who shared a bed.

Her hair fell across her face as she leaned forward, but she didn't push it back. Let him see her untamed. Let him notice something real.

"You're like a sphinx," she said suddenly, her voice cutting through the silence between them. "All these riddles, but never any answers."

Daniel looked up, finally. "What?"

"The riddle of us. The riddle of why we're still here."

He set down the phone. The gesture felt deliberate, almost practiced. "Maya, come on. It's just a busy period. You know how launch season is."

"I remember swimming in the ocean with you that night in Santa Monica," she continued, her voice steady. "How you said you'd never let anything come between us. Not work, not money, not fear. But something did."

"That's not fair."

"Isn't it?" She stood up, her chair scraping against the floor. "I saw the way you looked at her, Daniel. The new marketing director. Like she was something wild, something you needed to understand. Like she was a fox you couldn't quite catch."

His silence was confirmation enough.

"I'm done being part of your riddle," she said, grabbing her coat. "Some sphinxes don't have answers. Some just have consequences."
