The Riddle of Unsent Messages

sphinxhaircableiphonefox

The sphinx of modern romance sat on her nightstand—her iPhone, glowing with that half-typed message she'd never send. Sarah stared at it, the cable still tangled around her fingers like umbilical cord of a failed connection.

Three weeks since Marcus left. Three weeks of waking to empty sheets and the silence that follows.

She rose from bed and caught her reflection in the mirror. Her hair had grown wild during these weeks of mourning—dark curls framing eyes that looked older, somehow. She'd cut it all off after college, that dramatic pixie that shouted new beginnings. Now it just shouted neglected beginnings.

The office offered no refuge. Her students wrote papers about ancient mysteries while she graded with clinical detachment, red pen scratching through half-formed thoughts. She'd assigned them Oedipus and the Sphinx last week.

"What walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, three in the evening?" she'd written on the whiteboard. They'd stared blankly. No one answered.

The answer was man, but the real answer was time, and how it bent you toward darkness regardless of how straight you tried to stand.

That evening, she walked the river path where she and Marcus used to argue about everything and nothing. A flash of orange caught her eye—a fox, sleek and purposeful, slipping between bushes. It stopped, watching her with those too-knowing eyes, then vanished.

Foxes were like that. They appeared when you needed them most, offered no comfort, and left you feeling slightly prophetic.

Sarah's phone buzzed. A notification from LinkedIn—Marcus had updated his profile. New job, new city, new life already constructed without her.

She stood there as the sky purpled toward evening, feeling the sphinx's ancient weight settle on her chest. The riddle wasn't what walks on how many legs. The riddle was how to keep walking when someone else had been your gravity.

But the fox had known, somehow. Had shown her the way forward was through, not around. She deleted the unsent message, packed a bag, and booked a ticket to somewhere she'd never been.

Some sphinxes you solved. Some you simply outlived.
