The Riddle of Unlived Lives

sphinxzombiespinachfriend

Elena stood in the dairy aisle at 2 AM, clutching a bag of organic spinach like it was an anchor. Three years since Marcus left, and she still couldn't sleep past midnight without reaching for the phone that held his old number—now disconnected, like their promises.

She'd become a zombie of her former self, moving through corporate meetings and empty apartments with the hollow efficiency of someone who'd forgotten how to want anything. Her therapist suggested reconnecting with old friends. But what friends? The ones who'd slowly drifted away, exhausted by her grief loop?

The riddle of her life felt like staring at the sphinx she'd seen in Egypt during that ill-fated trip with Marcus—the one where they'd fought about something trivial in the shadow of ancient stone, not realizing their marriage was already crumbling.

She dropped the spinach into her basket. It landed next to a bottle of cheap wine.

"Elena?"

She turned. David—Marcus's best friend, the one who'd vanished right after the divorce papers were signed. He looked different. Softer around the edges, like he'd been living instead of just surviving.

"You're up late," she said, surprised her voice still worked.

"Insomnia. You?"

"Same."

They fell into step together, walking out of the store into the predawn darkness. The sphinx riddle seemed simpler somehow: How do two people who lost the same person find their way back to each other not as survivors, but as something new?

"I have fresh spinach at home," David said. "And a coffee maker that actually works."

The zombie inside her stirred, suddenly hungry. "I'd like that."

The sphinx remained silent, but the riddle had changed. Not "what happens next?" but "who gets to decide?" For the first time in three years, Elena thought the answer might be her.
