The Riddle of the Orange Sphinx

Lily loved playing padel on the sunny beach court near her home. Every day after school, she would grab her racquet and hit the bright blue ball back and forth with her best friend Mei. The ball would go *thwack* against the walls, and they would laugh until their sides hurt.

One afternoon, Lily hit the ball especially hard. It sailed over the court wall and disappeared behind a cluster of swaying palm trees.

"I'll get it!" Lily called out, skipping through the warm sand.

As she pushed through the palm fronds, she gasped. There, nestled between the trees, sat a magnificent sphinx the color of a ripe orange. Its fur shimmered like sunset, and its wise eyes twinkled with ancient magic.

"Welcome, young one," the Orange Sphinx rumbled gently. "I have been waiting for someone brave enough to find me."

Lily's heart beat faster, but she stood tall. "I'm not afraid. Well, maybe a little."

"That is honest," the sphinx purred. "I have a riddle for you. Solve it, and you shall receive a gift. Fail, and you must try again tomorrow."

Just then, something adorable waddled out from behind the sphinx—a tiny bear cub with fluffy golden fur! The cub let out a squeaky roar and tumbled over its own paws.

"This is Baby Beluga," the sphinx said. "He is very small but very brave. Like you."

The sphinx posed its riddle: "I grow but never age. I give shade but never speaks. I dance in the wind but never moves. What am I?"

Lily thought hard. She looked at the palm trees above, swaying in the breeze. She thought about how they started small and grew tall.

"A palm tree!" Lily exclaimed.

"Correct!" The sphinx's eyes glowed with warm light. Suddenly, the padel ball appeared in Lily's hand—now it was magical and glowed with a soft orange light.

"This ball will always bring your friends together," the sphinx said. "And whenever you play, remember: even the smallest bear can be brave, and even the simplest answer can be wise."

Baby Beluga the bear cub gave Lily's ankle a happy nuzzle.

From that day on, whenever Lily and Mei played padel, their games were filled with extra magic. And sometimes, if they looked closely toward the palm grove, they could see a flash of orange fur and hear the sound of a tiny, mighty roar.
