The Riddle of the Living

sphinxhairbullzombie

Miranda stood before her bathroom mirror at 2 AM, pulling strands of gray hair from her temples. Forty-two years old and she felt like something that had already died. Her job as a corporate compliance officer had turned her into a functioning zombie—autopilot through meetings, dead eyes facing spreadsheets, soul eroding by the hour.

That afternoon, her boss had called her into his office to deliver the usual bull about "synergy" and "thinking outside the box." What he meant was: work harder for the same money, pretend to care about things that didn't matter. She'd nodded, smiled her corporate smile, and felt another piece of herself chip away.

Her marriage wasn't faring better. David still looked at her with hunger sometimes, but she caught herself flinching when he reached for her now. When had she started feeling like a sphinx—impenetrable, riddle without answer, stone creature guarding nothing of value?

The irony wasn't lost on her. She had everything she was supposed to want: the career, the husband, the condo with its skyline view. Yet here she was, sleepless again, wondering if this was all there was. The slow death of possibility.

David stirred in the bedroom, called out her name. Miranda considered lying, saying she couldn't sleep, but instead she turned off the bathroom light and stood in the darkness. Maybe tomorrow she'd tell him the truth. Maybe she'd quit. Maybe she'd finally become something real instead of this carefully constructed fiction.

For now, she just breathed. In the darkness, she felt almost alive.
