The Riddle of the Green Hair

hairrunningsphinx

Leo stared at his reflection, his usually respectable brown hair now a vibrant, neon green — courtesy of a DIY dye kit and his best friend Kai's terrible advice. "Dude, it's fine," Kai had insisted. "Chicks dig guys who take risks."

Not Mrs. Gable, apparently. The AP English teacher raised one eyebrow as Leo slunk into his seat, pulling his hood up. "Mr. Chen, we're not running a nightclub in here."

The entire class snorted. Leo's face burned hotter than the dye chemicals had.

By seventh period, he'd officially accepted his social death. Track practice was his only escape — or so he thought, until he heard someone behind him on the trail.

"Green, huh? Bold choice."

Leo spun around to find Maya, the mysterious junior who sat in the back of English wearing oversized hoodides and reading books with titles like "Existentialism for Dummies." People called her Sphinx behind her back because she was unreadable, occasionally dropping cryptic wisdom in conversations and then disappearing before anyone could respond.

"It was an accident," Leo mumbled, still jogging. "A really permanent one."

Maya fell into step beside him, matching his pace easily. She had these intense eyes that seemed to see right through people's BS. "I like it. Shows you're not terrified of looking stupid. That's rare."

They ran in comfortable silence for a minute, Leo's neon spikes somehow less devastating with Sphinx herself casually approving them.

"So what's your deal?" he found himself asking. "Why does everyone call you Sphinx?"

Maya shrugged, a small smile playing at her lips. "Because I ask questions that make people uncomfortable. Want to try one?"

Leo nodded, breath coming faster.

"What's the one thing you're most afraid of people knowing about you?"

The question hit Leo like a physical force. He almost stopped running. He thought about how he secretly wrote poetry in his Notes app. How he cried every time he watched "Up." How he had no idea what he wanted to do with his life and everyone else seemed to have it figured out.

Instead, he said: "That I care this much about my hair."

Maya laughed — actually laughed, and it was this warm, genuine sound that made Leo's chest feel weird. "Fair enough. But for what it's worth? Green works on you."

She sprinted ahead then, effortlessly pulling away. Leo picked up his pace, feeling lighter than he had all day.

"Hey Sphinx!" he called after her. "What's the answer? To your riddle?"

She didn't turn back, but her voice carried over the wind: "Figure it out yourself, Green. That's kind of the point."

Leo grinned, running faster, suddenly okay with not knowing everything. Some mysteries were worth solving at their own pace.
