The Riddle of the Court

Maya's palms were sweating through her grip on the padel racket. This was it — tryouts for the club team, and she was bunking with the juniors while her friends were probably at the beach. Again.

"You're up, Maya," Coach Rodriguez called.

The junior varsity players snickered. Whatever. Maya adjusted her visor and stepped onto the court. Then she saw her.

Riley Chen. Senior. Team captain. The girl everyone called "the Sphinx" because she never gave anything away — no emotions, no weaknesses, just that unreadable mask and riddle-like comments that left people overthinking everything for days.

Riley leaned against the fence, watching. Maya's stomach did backflips.

"Focus," she whispered. "Just hit the ball."

Game on. Maya's first serve went wild. Nice. The juniors laughed. She felt her face burning.

"Your footwork's all over the place," Sphinx spoke from the fence. "What's riddle number one? How do you find your balance when you're scared to fall?"

Maya froze. Was that a literal question or some weird metaphorical life advice?

"I — what?"

Riley just raised an eyebrow. "Figure it out."

After tryouts, Maya cut through the park behind the rec center, needing to breathe. She'd missed the cut. Obviously. Coach had given her that polite "we'll be in touch" which meant "please never come back."

Then she saw it — a fox, orange fur glowing in the golden hour light, sitting on a bench. Just watching her. Maya stopped. The fox tilted its head, almost like it was waiting for something.

"What?" she whispered. "You gonna ask me a riddle too?"

The fox's tail flicked. Then it hopped down and trotted toward the padel courts, stopping to look back at her once. Twice.

Maya followed. Crazy, right? Following a wild animal? But something about it felt... intentional.

The fox led her to the court. It sat by the baseline, watching intently as Maya picked up a ball. She served. It went in.

Another serve. In again.

The fox's amber eyes seemed to say, "See? You're not scared when you're not trying to be perfect."

"Riddle number one solved," a voice said behind her.

She spun around. Riley stood there, holding two rackets.

"Find your balance by not overthinking it." Sphinx's expression softened for the first time. "Also, that fox has been hanging around the courts for months. Pretty sure she just wants attention."

"You named her?"

"Vixen. Obviously." Riley tossed a racket to Maya. "Wanna play?"

Maya caught it, grinning. "Bet."

Maybe she hadn't made the team. But she'd definitely unlocked something way better.
