The Riddle of the charging Cable
Maya's iPhone sat at 3% battery, mocking her with its dying glow. The freshman quad was buzzing—seniors lounging on the grass, couples holding hands, friend groups laughing in tight circles. Maya stood alone against the wall, her charging cable uselessly dangling from her backpack like a dead snake.
"Hey, Maya!" called Lena, popping out of nowhere with her perfect hair and effortless chill. "There's that ancient Egyptian exhibit downtown. My parents are taking me Saturday, you wanna come?"
Maya's stomach did that thing where it simultaneously dropped and soared. Lena—actual Lena, who sat at the popular table—was inviting her somewhere.
"Sure," Maya said, way too fast. "Sounds... cool."
"Perfect!" Lena grinned. "Bring your phone, we can take aesthetic pics for the 'gram."
The exhibit was cooler than Maya expected. Giant statues, faded hieroglyphs, actual mummies. But the centerpiece was the Sphinx—or at least a massive reproduction of it. The inscription beneath it read: WHAT HAS ONE VOICE BUT NEVER SPEAKS, HAS ONE BED BUT NEVER SLEEPS?
"That's the sphinx's riddle," Lena said, leaning close to read. "Man, imagine being that pressed over puns."
Maya stared at the stone creature's face—half lion, half human, permanently frozen in that unreadable expression. Something about it hit her in the chest.
"It's about having a voice but never using it," Maya said quietly. "Being seen but never heard."
Lena looked at her, really looked at her. "Damn. That's... actually deep."
Maya's phone buzzed in her pocket. Instagram notification. Probably something pointless. She didn't check.
"You know," Lena said, "we're all kinda sphinxes, right? Like, posting and DMing but never actually saying what we mean."
Maya thought about her charging cable. About how she'd spent all week tethered to outlets, terrified of missing out, while missing everything.
"Yeah," Maya said. "But maybe we don't have to be."
They stood there for a minute, just two freshmen in an Egyptian exhibit, not looking at their phones, not performing for anyone. Just standing.
"Hey," Lena said, "wanna grab boba after? My treat."
Maya smiled. For real this time. "Yeah. Yeah, I'd love that."
Her phone died two minutes later. She didn't even notice.
