The Riddle of Storms

The corporate retreat had been Elena's idea—her attempt to salvage her marriage to Marcus, to bear the weight of seven years of silent resentments alone. Now, as she stood on the deck of the rented cabin watching lightning stitch itself across the horizon, she wondered why she'd bothered.

Marcus was inside, probably already asleep, or pretending to be. He'd mastered that particular art years ago.

"Beautiful, isn't it?"

Elena jumped. Julian—Marcus's business partner, the one everyone called 'the sphinx' because no one could ever tell what he was thinking—stood in the doorway holding two crystal glasses. His eyes, dark and unreadable, seemed to know exactly what she'd been thinking.

"The storm," she said, accepting the glass he offered. Whiskey.

"I meant you." The words hung there, heavy and sudden as thunder.

She should have walked away. Should have laughed it off or made some deflection about being tired. Instead, she took a sip and felt the whiskey burn down her throat like courage. "You don't know me, Julian."

"I know you're unhappy. I know Marcus takes you for granted. I know you've been in love with me since last year's Christmas party."

The lightning flash illuminated his face—calm, certain, utterly terrifying.

"That's not love," she said quietly. "That's just—"

"What?"

She couldn't finish. Because in that moment, rain began to fall in sheets, water cascading off the roof like the world was trying to wash away everything she'd been trying not to feel for months. She set down her glass and stepped toward him, and when he pulled her close, she didn't resist.

Later, she would wonder if any of it had been real. But standing there in the rain with Julian's hands on her waist, his mouth finding hers in the dark, Elena felt something crack open inside her—something that had been sealed shut for so long she'd forgotten it existed.

The storm raged on, indifferent, as she made her choice.
