The Riddle of Room 207
Maya's thumbs moved across her iPhone screen like they were possessed, firing off texts to the group chat. 'U guys coming??? Clara's party starts in 20 and I'm STILL at home.'
Her cat, Pickles, batted at a stray spinach leaf that had fallen from her dinner. Maya shoved her phone in her pocket and checked her reflection in the mirror. Same face. Same overthinking eyes. Same Maya who'd rather stay home reading than survive another high school social minefield.
'You're not leaving until you finish your vegetables,' her mom called from the kitchen.
'Mom, I'm FIFTEEN. Nobody's parents make them eat spinach before parties.'
'Then you don't go.' Classic mom logic.
But then her phone buzzed. Not the group chat. A number she didn't recognize.
'Riddle me this: I have wings but cannot fly. I have secrets but cannot speak. What am I?'
Maya frowned. Probably someone from school pranking her. But something made her type back: 'A sphinx.'
'Correct. Now riddle me this: Why does the girl who hates parties pretend she wants to go?'
Maya's heart raced. Who WAS this?
'Who is this??'
'Someone who sees you. The real you. Not the version you perform for the group chat.'
Pickles jumped onto her lap, purring. Maya looked at her phone, then at the spinach on her plate, then at her reflection again. The Sphinx's riddle had always been about identity — about knowing yourself versus letting others define you.
She typed: 'I don't want to go. I just don't want to be left out.'
'Then don't go. Be left IN with yourself instead.'
Maya deleted her unanswered messages from the group chat. She turned off her phone and ate the spinach. Pickles purred louder. For the first time in forever, she felt like she'd solved something that actually mattered.
