The Riddle of Moonlight Meadow
Luna was a curious little fox with fur as orange as autumn leaves. Every night, while her brothers and sisters slept, she would creep to the edge of their den and watch the stars twinkling above Moonlight Meadow.
One especially bright evening, Luna spotted something peculiar. A lumpy figure shuffled slowly through the tall grass. It looked like a wolf, but its fur was patchy and fell off in clumps. It moved with a wobble, like a newborn learning to walk.
Luna's tail twitched with curiosity. Against her mother's warnings, she crept closer.
"Hello?" she called out softly.
The figure turned slowly. Its eyes were gentle, not scary at all. "Hello, little fox. I am Ziggy. I'm... well, I'm a zombie, but not the scary kind. I'm just lonely."
Luna had heard stories about zombies—monsters who chased animals and ate brains. But Ziggy just looked sad. His greenish skin and loose buttons didn't seem frightening at all.
"Why are you lonely?" Luna asked, tilting her head.
"Everyone runs away when they see me," Ziggy sighed. "I just want a friend."
Just then, a magnificent creature appeared from behind an ancient oak tree. It had the body of a lion and the head of a human, with wings folded at its sides.
"A sphinx!" Luna gasped.
The sphinx spoke in a voice like rustling silk. "I am Seraphina, guardian of Moonlight Meadow. I have been watching you both. Young fox, you looked beyond appearances. Zombie, you seek friendship, not fear. This pleases me."
Seraphina's golden eyes twinkled. "Answer my riddle, and you shall both receive a gift. What has a heart that beats, yet sometimes stops loving? A voice that speaks, yet sometimes stays silent? A friend that stays, yet sometimes walks away?"
Luna thought hard. Ziggy looked confused.
"A person!" Luna exclaimed. "Because people can choose how to act!"
Seraphina smiled. "Wise answer. True friendship comes from the heart, not from how someone looks." She waved her paw, and Ziggy's patchy fur became soft and fluffy. His greenish skin glowed with warmth.
"You're no longer a zombie," Luna said happily. "You're a regular wolf now!"
"Thank you, Luna," Ziggy said, his new tail wagging. "Will you be my friend?"
"Always!"
And every night after that, Luna and Ziggy played under the stars, while Seraphina watched from her oak tree, smiling at the magic of true friendship.
The meadow echoed with their laughter—a reminder that the best friends sometimes come in the most unexpected packages.
