The Riddle of Loyalty

Elena sat on her balcony with Caesar, her golden retriever, watching the fireworks spill across the Singapore skyline. Inside, her husband Marcus was hosting another corporate gala—his fifth this quarter. She'd stopped attending months ago.

'You're too perceptive for your own good,' Marcus had told her once, laughing, when she'd pointed out the subtle tension between his business partners. Now she wondered if he'd meant it as a warning.

The pharmaceutical company Marcus worked for had been aggressively acquiring smaller biotech firms. Elena, a former investigative journalist, had started noticing patterns: mergers announced days after confidential research presentations, patents filed under shell companies, a competitor's lead researcher found dead in an apparent robbery gone wrong.

She'd asked questions. Marcus had called her paranoid, then distant, then loving again in that carefully calibrated way that made her question her own sanity. That's when she'd hired the private investigator.

The report had arrived that morning. Marcus wasn't just having an affair. He was a spy—corporate espionage, selling his company's research to their largest competitor. The photo showed him handing over documents in a parking garage, his face shadowed but unmistakable.

Caesar whined, resting his head on her knee. Dogs didn't lie. Dogs didn't calculate the optimal moment to betray you. They simply loved you, with a loyalty that humans couldn't fake, no matter how hard they tried.

Tomorrow, she would decide whether to confront him or simply disappear. For now, she watched the fireworks, each burst of light and sound like another unanswered question, another Sphinx riddle with no answer, only silence. Caesar pressed closer, his warm weight against her side the only truth she had left.
