The Riddle of Kai's Eyes

zombiesphinxspy

I felt like a zombie crawling through third period US History, coffee staining my teeth like a bad habit I couldn't quit. Finals week had turned everyone into the walking dead, eyes glazed, answers recited on autopilot. But she sat three rows ahead, back straight, hand raising with perfect precision. Maya. The sphinx of sophomore year.

Nobody knew what made her tick. She'd transferred in two months ago from somewhere unspecified, answering every question about her past with that same mysterious smile—part invitation, part warning. Like she knew something the rest of us didn't.

"What's her deal?" Jenna whispered, sliding into the seat beside me. "I've been doing recon all week. No social media. Nothing. It's like she doesn't exist before November."

"Maybe she's a spy," I joked, but my stomach did that stupid flippy thing it always did when Maya looked over her shoulder and caught me watching. Her eyes locked with mine, just for a second. Something unreadable flickered there. Recognition? Amusement?

That afternoon, I found a note folded into my chemistry book. Meet me behind the gym at 4. No signature. But I knew.

She was waiting, leaning against the brick wall like she'd been carved out of shadow and secrets. "You've been watching me, Alex."

Heat flooded my cheeks. "I—that's—"

"It's okay." She stepped closer, and for the first time, the sphinx's riddle seemed to solve itself. "I've been watching you too."

Turns out, some mysteries aren't meant to be solved from a distance. Sometimes you have to get close enough to let yourself be seen too.
