The Riddle of June

Maya's thumb hovered over the screen, that familiar blue light washing over her face in the darkened room. The notification blinked — a party. At Carter's place. Her stomach did that thing where it tried to exit through her throat.

"You going?" her texts read. Fox's reply came instantly: "Only if you are."

Fox. Real name: Alexis. Called Fox because she was clever, quick, impossible to catch — like the fox who always outsmarted the hound in every story ever. Maya had been lowkey crushing since seventh grade, which was pathetic in ways she refused to examine.

"I'm "maybe-ing,"" Maya typed. "You know. Social battery at 3%."

"The sphinx awaits," Fox wrote back. "You coming to solve the riddle or nah?"

Their thing. The sphinx. This impossible question that lived between them, unspoken: *What are we?* Maya never knew how to answer. Every time she tried, the words dissolved before they could form.

Her iphone buzzed again. Carter was posting pics. People laughing. Red cups. That specific kind of teenage joy that Maya always watched from outside, pressed against the glass like a ghost haunting her own life.

"I'm running over," Fox sent. "Be there in ten. We can walk together."

Maya's heart hammered. Running. She was always running — away from parties, away from conversations, away from moments where she might have to say something real. Fox kept running toward her.

She grabbed her hoodie. The night air hit her like a revelation. Fox was already at the corner, that grin plastered on, hands shoved in pockets like it was the most natural thing in the world.

"Sup, sphinx whisperer," Fox said, bumping her shoulder. "Ready to face the mystery?"

Maya looked at her — really looked. The way the streetlight caught the edge of Fox's smile. The way her eyes said *I've been waiting for you.*

"The riddle's not the sphinx," Maya said, surprising herself. "It's why I keep pretending I don't want to be wherever you are."

Fox's grin softened. Something else took its place. Something that made Maya's chest feel like it was expanding, like there was finally room for everything she'd been holding back.

"Cool," Fox said. "Now that we solved that, we gonna go to this party or what?"

Maya laughed. A real one. "Yeah. Let's go."

The iphone stayed in her pocket, dark and quiet. For once, she wasn't running away.
