The Riddle of Gray

Elena found the first gray hair three weeks after her forty-second birthday, while standing before the museum's newest acquisition: a pristine limestone sphinx from the Ptolemaic dynasty. The irony wasn't lost on her—ancient riddles about eternal youth, while her own mortality announced itself in silver strands against her temple.

"You look like hell," Marcus said, appearing beside her with his customary bluntness. He shook a handful of supplements from his pocket—vitamin D, magnesium, some unidentifiable yellow capsule. "These are supposed to help with stress. Want some?"

She declined, as always. Marcus had been hoarding vitamins since his divorce three years ago, his bathroom cabinet a graveyard of half-finished bottles promising vitality neither of them felt anymore.

The sphinx had arrived with controversy. Dr. Harriman, the museum director, had bypassed proper acquisition channels—a sphinx-like maneuver in itself. Now the board demanded answers, and Harriman had assigned Elena the investigation, knowing her tenure review was coming up.

"He's setting you up to take the fall," Marcus said, watching her review the provenance documents. "Like Oedipus at the crossroads. Answer the riddle or get destroyed."

"I'm not afraid of Harriman's riddles."

"You should be." His voice softened. "I found another gray hair this morning. My fifth."

She turned to him, really seeing him for the first time in months. The lines around his eyes, the way his hair had thinned at the crown. They were both facing the same sphinx, asking the same questions: Who am I when I'm no longer young and hungry? What happens when the museum's next acquisition feels more important than your own legacy?

The investigation revealed what she suspected—Harriman had bypassed the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, relying on a shady dealer with forged paperwork. Elena drafted her report, knowing it might cost her the promotion. Might cost her everything.

That night, she pulled the gray hair from her temple and placed it on her bathroom counter, next to Marcus's vitamin bottles. Some riddles you solve. Some you learn to live with.
