The Riddle of Friday Night
Maya's hair wouldn't cooperate. Not today. Not when Jason had actually noticed her in chemistry and asked what she was doing Friday. She stood before her bathroom mirror, armed with her mom's expensive hair serum, trying to tame the frizzy halo that had appeared despite her best efforts.
"You need your vitamin D!" her mom called from downstairs. Maya rolled her eyes so hard it practically hurt. "Yes, Mom, I took it!" She'd swallowed the chalky supplement with her breakfast, along with the crushing anxiety that Jason would think she was trying too hard.
That's when her phone buzzed. Jason: "Escape room with my crew Friday? You in? Sphinx's Challenge downtown."
Maya's heart did that embarrassing flutter thing. His crew. His friends. The people who'd defined cool since seventh grade, while Maya had been busy being... invisible.
Her gaming PC sat in the corner, a shrine to Friday nights spent alone. But the HDMI cable was loose again, flickering the monitor whenever she bumped her desk. She'd been meaning to fix it for weeks, but somehow the loose connection felt fitting—like her entire social life. Partially plugged in. Never quite solid.
Friday arrived with her hair still rebelling against gravity. She met them at Sphinx's Challenge, a converted warehouse with Egyptian-themed branding that was somehow both cringe and honestly kind of cool.
"You're Maya!" Jason grinned, and something in her chest unlaced. "This is my friend Sam—they're obsessed with puzzles."
Sam nodded at her, deliberately casual. "Your hair looks sick, by the way."
Maya blinked. That was it? No subtle roast, no backhanded compliment? Just... genuine?
The escape room was a blur of hieroglyphics and hidden compartments. But when they hit the final riddle—a sphinx statue with glowing eyes—everyone froze. The clue referenced something about "what binds but cannot be seen."
"Cable!" Maya blurted, remembering her loose HDMI connection. "Like cable that carries signal but you can't see the electricity flowing through it!"
Jason stared at her, then laughed. "That's actually genius."
They escaped with four minutes to spare. Later, over milkshakes, Sam taught Maya how to properly secure loose cables. Jason kept looking at her like he was seeing her for the first time.
And Maya's hair? Still frizzy. Still imperfect. But as she caught her reflection in the shop window, she decided she didn't mind. Some riddles you solve. Some you just live with.
