The Riddle of Freshman Year

Leo's phone buzzed against his palm, another snapchat from Maya that he couldn't bring himself to open. The iphone screen glowed in the darkness of his closet sanctuary, showing a notification that made his stomach do backflips. Meanwhile, his childhood teddy bear stared at him from the top shelf with those mismatched button eyes, judging him for being sixteen and still hiding during parties.

"You coming out or what?" his best friend Dev yelled through the door. "People are asking about you."

Leo took a deep breath. This was supposed to be his night – the night he finally talked to Maya, finally broke out of his shell. But social situations felt like some kind of test, like he was always saying the wrong thing.

He stepped into the hallway where the Sphinx statue from Egypt week (don't ask) still loomed in the corner. Its stone face seemed to mock him with its eternal riddle: what happens when the quiet kid tries to become someone else?

"There he is!" Dev appeared, weaving through dancers. "Maya's by the fish tank. Go talk to her."

Maya. The girl who'd sat behind him in bio since August, who always laughed at his terrible puns, who he'd been messaging on his phone for weeks but never actually spoken to beyond "here's the homework."

She was standing alone by Mr. Harrison's classroom goldfish, watching it swim in endless circles. The goldfish had a better social life than he did.

Leo's heart hammered. His palms sweat. This was it – the moment every teen movie had prepared him for, except no one had mentioned how terrifying real life actually was.

"Hey," he managed, voice cracking.

Maya turned, phone in hand. "Oh hey, Leo!" She smiled – actually smiled. "I was just texting you."

"You were?"

"Yeah. Your snaps are actually funny. Unlike Kevin's, which are just... Kevin being Kevin." She rolled her eyes, and Leo felt something shift inside him.

The goldfish swam to the front of its bowl, staring at them both like a tiny, orange therapist.

"So..." Leo started, then noticed something. "Is that a bear onesie?"

Maya looked down at her fuzzy brown pajama top. "Oh yeah, it's my comfort outfit. I know, I know, who wears a bear costume to a house party?"

Leo laughed, really laughed. "I have a teddy bear on my closet shelf at home. His name's Barnaby."

"No way." Maya's eyes lit up. "I still sleep with mine too. His name's Captain Cuddlesworth."

They stood there talking while Kevin's EDM playlist thudded in the background, while people posted Instagram stories about how "lit" the party was, while the Sphinx watched silently from the corner. And for the first time in his life, Leo felt like he might actually be figuring out the riddle – not by changing who he was, but by finding someone who liked the real him.

The goldfish swam another circle, and Maya typed something into her phone.

"Just so you know," she said, looking up with this smile that made Leo's chest feel weird in the best way, "you don't have to hide in closets anymore. I think you're pretty cool."

His phone buzzed again. Maya, sitting right there, had just snapchatted him: *FINALLY.*
