The Riddle of Fox Lane
Maya pressed her phone against her chest, heart doing that stupid flutter thing it always did when Leo's name lit up her screen. Three little dots bouncing in the chat window like they were teasing her.
"You coming to Jordan's party?"
She typed and deleted five different responses before settling on: "maybe lol"
Basic? Definitely. But Maya had mastered the art of playing it cool, even as her stomach twisted itself into knots. Junior year was supposed to be her year—the year she finally figured out who she was, instead of being the quiet girl who sat in the back of AP Bio, secretly watching everyone like a total spy. She'd cataloged every social dynamic at Northwood High: who liked who, who'd secretly hooked up with whose ex, whose parents were getting divorced. Information was currency, and Maya was rich in it but broke in actual friendships.
That afternoon, she took the long way home past the old Miller property on Fox Lane. The place was practically urban legend material—abandoned since before she was born, with a rusted gate and a stone sphinx someone had dragged onto the overgrown lawn decades ago. Maya had always found it weirdly comforting, this stone creature with its human head and lion body, forever silent, forever watching. Sometimes she felt like that herself—seeing everything, saying nothing.
"Hey Sphinx," she murmured, pausing by the gate. "You figure out the meaning of life yet?"
A rustle in the bushes made her jump. An actual fox—sleek reddish fur, bright eyes—trotted into view and sat, watching her with what looked suspiciously like amusement.
"Great," Maya laughed. "Now even nature's roasting me."
Her phone buzzed. Leo again. "Party's not gonna be the same without you"
Maya stared at the message, the fox still watching her, the stone Sphinx silent beside her. Maybe—just maybe—it was time to stop spying from the sidelines and actually participate in her own life. The riddle wasn't who she was supposed to be. The riddle was why she'd spent so long pretending she didn't already know.
