The Riddle of Everything

sphinxbullcathat

The hallway felt like a gauntlet, and I was walking through it with my stupid vintage fedora pulled low like it could somehow make me invisible. Jace caught my eye by the lockers and smirked.

"Nice hat, Egyptologist."

"Shut up," I muttered, but my face was burning. The hat was supposed to be my armor—a persona, something cooler than regular Maya who sat in the back of algebra and overthought everything.

Then Tamsyn walked past, and the universe suddenly needed to align itself differently. She looked like she'd stepped out of a different dimension where everything was effortless. Her cat-eye eyeliner was perfect, and my brain short-circuited trying to come up with something that wasn't completely lame.

"Hey," she said, stopping. "I like your hat. It's bold."

"Thanks," I managed, then immediately wanted to die because that's it. That was my entire personality.

"You going to Jackson's party tonight?"

"Maybe?"

"You should." She smiled, and I felt like I'd just been handed a winning lottery ticket I didn't know how to cash. "Bring the hat. It suits you."

She walked away, and Jace leaned against the lockers like the sphinx guarding impossible secrets.

"She was flirting with you, you know."

"No she wasn't."

"Bro, that was textbook. You're just overthinking it like you always do." He shook his head. "Sometimes you gotta stop treating every conversation like it's got hidden meanings you're gonna miss."

But that's the thing about high school—everything feels like it's got hidden meanings. Every look, every text, every casual word in the hallway carries the weight of possibility or rejection. The bull in my head kept charging through the same what-ifs: What if she was just being nice? What if I show up and it's weird? What if, what if, what if.

Then my phone buzzed. A text from Tamsyn: Party's at 8. Don't overthink it. Just come. 😘

I stood there, adjusting my hat like it somehow fit differently now. Maybe the real riddle wasn't figuring out what everything meant. Maybe it was just showing up.

"Alright," I said. "I'm going."

"Finally." Jace grinned. "Now let's figure out what you're actually gonna wear, because no offense, but you can't live in that hat forever."
