The Riddle of Blue Hair
Maya stood in front of the bathroom mirror, electric blue hair dye staining her gloves. Her mom was going to lose it, but after the incident at lunch yesterday—the one where nobody noticed her until she literally tripped into the center table—she needed something that screamed "I exist."
The transformation complete, she spent the night running through every possible scenario. How would Jason react? Would her friends barely-existing-group chat suddenly blow up? By morning, her hair was basically a neon sign that said NOTICE ME.
First period English, Mr. Henderson was going on about some ancient mythology thing. "The sphinx," he announced, "guarded the city with riddles. Answer wrong, and you'd get eaten. Talk about high stakes testing, am I right?"
Maya's phone buzzed under her desk. Jason: *ur hair is sick*
She almost dropped her phone. Jason? The same Jason who sat three rows back and had literally never texted her first? Her heart did that embarrassing flutter thing.
"Hey, Maya," someone whispered behind her. "Your hair looks... really good. Actually."
It was Chloe, the one who always acted like she was too cool to breathe. Maya blinked. What was happening?
After school, Maya's parents weren't even mad. "It's just hair," her mom said, shrugging. But then her dad dropped the real bomb: they'd won custody of the class pet for the weekend. A goldfish. Because apparently sophomore year wasn't weird enough already.
That night, Maya sat at her desk, goldfish bowl glowing beside her laptop, sphinx riddles pulled up on her screen (research for English, obviously, not obsession), and phone blowing up with messages about her hair.
She stared at the fish, swimming in endless circles, and realized something: maybe the sphinx's real riddle wasn't about answers. Maybe it was about asking the right questions.
Like: Why had she spent fifteen years trying to disappear when the whole time, all anyone wanted was for her to show up?
Maya picked up her phone and typed back to Jason: *thx*
Small steps. The fish did another lap. Maya took a deep breath and posted her first selfie in years.
Some riddles don't have answers. Some riddles just have blue hair.
