The Riddle of Bad Hair Days
Maya stared into her bathroom mirror, horror-struck. The haircut wasn't just bad—it was a full-blown catastrophe, the kind that made you want to wear a hoodie until graduation. Her mom had meant well, trying to save money with DIY YouTube tutorials, but Maya's bangs now looked like they'd been attacked by a lawnmower.
"Perfect timing," she muttered. Sophomore year started tomorrow, and she already needed a personality transplant just to match this disaster.
Her sphynx cat, Sphinx (yes, she knew the naming was on the nose), wound around her ankles, purring like a tiny motor. Sphinx was hairless, wrinkly, and completely unbothered by societal beauty standards. Maya envied her.
"At least someone in this house is comfortable being different," Maya sighed, scratching Sphinx behind her enormous ears.
The next day at school, Maya kept her hood up, dodging questions like she was a celebrity in hiding. But by lunch, her best friend Jaya pulled the hood down.
"It's hair, Maya. It grows back," Jaya said, spinning her phone. "But you hiding in that hoodie? That's not gonna grow back into confidence."
Maya blinked. Jaya was right—but also wrong. The hair wasn't the point. The point was that everyone else seemed to have life figured out, and Maya was still stuck on question one of the test.
That night, Maya sat on her bed, Sphinx curled in her lap like a naked, potato-shaped philosopher. The cat stared at her with enormous, wisdom-filled eyes, as if presenting a riddle: What makes you you, when you strip away what shows?
Maya thought about it. She wasn't her hair. She wasn't her awkwardness. She was the girl who rescue-had an "ugly" cat because nobody else wanted her. She was the one who stayed up until 3am reading Greek mythology, then spent lunch explaining it to anyone who'd listen.
The next morning, Maya walked into school with her head held high. Her bangs were still tragic, but her smile was genuine. When someone asked about her hair, she just shrugged.
"I'm channeling my inner Sphinx," she said. "Confidently hairless and completely over it."
Jaya choked on her drink laughing. "That cat has more swag than everyone here combined."
Maya realized she'd been given a riddle all along: The sphinx's secret wasn't in the answer—it was in the asking. And bad hair days? They were just practice for being brave anyway.
