The Riddle in the Router

Maya's summer job at the electronics recycling center was supposed to be easy money, but she hadn't counted on becoming the designated cable untangler. Every day, she spent hours wrestling with knots of ethernet, HDMI, and power cords that looked like electronic spaghetti.

"You good, M?" her coworker Kai asked, leaning against the sorting bin.

Maya sighed, holding up a particularly stubborn tangle. "Just living the dream. My mom says this builds character."

"Your mom also says those gummy vitamins are gonna make you grow six inches," Kai teased.

Maya rolled her eyes. "She swears they're magical. I've been taking them since kindergarten and I'm still waiting for my growth spurt."

The back office held the real treasure: old gaming systems, vintage computers, and mysterious gadgets people had thrown away. During breaks, Maya and Kai explored the pile like archaeologists.

That's when she found it—a dusty, cryptic device with a sphinx symbol stamped on the side. It looked like someone had mashed together a router, a puzzle box, and an ancient artifact.

"Dude, that's sick," Kai said, peering over her shoulder. "What is it?"

"No idea." Maya traced the sphinx engraving with her finger. "But look at this inscription.""I am the firewall that guards the path. Solve me, or remain disconnected."

Maya's heart raced. This wasn't just e-waste—this was a challenge.

For the next week, she stayed late, working through the sphinx's riddles. Each solution unlocked another piece of the device's mystery. Kai brought her energy drinks and watched, occasionally offering wrong answers with dramatic flair.

"It's obviously asking about the meaning of life," he declared.

"Pretty sure it wants me to configure the subnet settings, actually."

The day before summer ended, Maya solved the final puzzle. The sphinx device whirred to life, projecting a holographic message: CONGRATULATIONS, PUZZLE MASTER. LOCAL HACKATHON REGISTRATION: ACCEPTED.

"No way," Maya breathed.

Kai high-fived her. "You're literally going to be famous. Don't forget us little people when you're tech royalty."

Maya grinned, suddenly realizing those annoying cable-untangling sessions had led to something incredible. Her mom's gummy vitamins hadn't made her taller, but this summer had definitely helped her grow.
