The Riddle in the Mirror

sphinxvitaminfriend

Maya's bathroom mirror had become her own personal sphinx. Every morning, she'd stand there waiting for an answer that never came.

"What are you?" the mirror seemed to ask. "Are you smart enough? Pretty enough? Enough enough?"

She popped her daily vitamin — the orange one her mom swore would fix everything, as if Vitamin D could cure sophomore year. Her phone buzzed on the counter. Jordan.

"u coming? everyone's @ the park"

Maya hesitated. Jordan had been her best friend since seventh grade, back when friendship was simple — shared secrets and matching friendship bracelets. But lately, everything felt complicated. Jordan was changing, wearing makeup and flirting with seniors. Maya was still Maya, still figuring out who that even was.

She grabbed her backpack and headed out, the vitamin bottle rattling in her pocket like an accusation.

The park was crowded. Jordan sat by the fountain with the new crowd — the ones who drank coffee and talked about colleges like sophomores were supposed to have it all figured out. Maya felt like an imposter in her own life.

"Hey!" Jordan called, waving her over. "We were just talking about Mr. Chen's ancient Egypt unit. The sphinx riddle? What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?"

"A human," Maya said quietly. "We crawl as babies, walk as adults, use canes when we're old."

"Exactly!" Jordan beamed like she'd discovered something profound.

Maya looked at them all — these half-formed humans caught between childhood and whatever came next, all pretending they knew who they were. The riddle wasn't about legs. It was about how you could be so many things at once, how you could be your old self and your new self simultaneously, and how none of it made sense until it did.

"Actually," Maya said, finding her voice, "I think the answer is just... growing up."

Jordan really looked at her then, and for a second, the old Jordan was back.

"Yeah," Jordan said softly. "Yeah, I guess it is."

That night, Maya didn't wait for her mirror sphinx to ask anything. She just looked at herself and thought, I'm working on it. And that was enough.
