The Riddle in the Cafeteria

sphinxspinachpapaya

Maya's hands trembled as she approached the table where the cool kids sat. Her carefully packed lunch - papaya chunks, spinach salad, and hummus - suddenly seemed impossibly uncool compared to their pepperoni pizza and Mountain Dew.

"Hey Maya," Liam said with that lazy grin that made half the sophomore class weak in the knees. "What's with the rabbit food?"

She froze. This was it - her moment to either impress him or mortify herself completely.

"It's... actually really good," she managed, then promptly got a piece of spinach stuck in her teeth.

Across the cafeteria, Jordan waved her over to their usual table. Jordan, who wore vintage band tees and didn't care that Maya's mom still packed her lunch. Jordan, who'd helped her study for English when everyone else was at Skylar's party last weekend.

Mr. Harrison's voice echoed in her memory: "The sphinx's riddle wasn't about being clever - it was about knowing yourself."

Maya looked at Liam, at his perfect smile and the way his friends snickered at her papaya. Then she looked at Jordan, who was probably reading some obscure graphic novel and would definitely make a spinach joke but wouldn't mean it cruelly.

"You know what?" Maya said, surprising herself. "This rabbit food is actually fire." She popped a papaya chunk in her mouth, turned on her heel, and walked away.

The sphinx would've been proud.

"Did you just...?" Jordan's eyes widened as Maya slid into her usual seat.

"Yeah." Maya fished the spinach from her teeth with her tongue. "And I think I finally figured out the answer to the riddle."

"Which one?"

"The one about what matters more than being cool." Maya grinned. "Spoiler alert: it's having friends who won't roast you for eating fruit."

Jordan snorted. "Bro, I roast you for everything. That's what best friends are for."

"Fair." Maya took another bite of papaya. "But at least you do it with love."

"Lowkey true." Jordan pulled out their phone. "Now please tell me you didn't just walk away from Liam for fruit salad."

"Not just fruit salad." Maya pointed her fork. "Fruit salad with self-respect."

"Valid." Jordan nodded solemnly. "Highkey valid."
