The Riddle in the Basement

Maya's phone buzzed with the third text from Jenna. *Where r u??? The party's actually not lame.* Maya stared at her screen, thumb hovering. She'd been hiding in the basement for twenty minutes, spiraling. This was supposed to be her night – her chance to finally talk to Alex without being weird. Instead, she'd frozen.

The basement was weirdly quiet. A stray **cat** – Jenna's brother's animal, something about emotional support – wound around her ankles, purring like a tiny engine. Maya bent down, scratching behind its ears. "At least you don't think I'm awkward," she muttered.

"You talking to yourself again?" Maya jumped. Alex stood in the doorway, holding a **cable** for his guitar. His hair was messier than usual, dark curls falling over his forehead. He'd changed into a hoodie since she'd seen him earlier. "Jenna sent me to find you. Said you went MIA."

"Yeah. Just... needed a minute." Maya's heart hammered. "Social battery died."

Alex nodded, leaning against the doorframe. "I get that. Parties can be intense." He paused. "Hey, can I ask you something?"

"Shoot."

"That **sphinx** tattoo on your wrist – what's the story behind it?"

Maya blinked. She'd completely forgotten she was wearing short sleeves. The sphinx had been a impulse decision last summer, her way of claiming something that felt like hers – riddles, secrets, things left unsaid. "Honestly? I just liked that it's about mysteries. Some questions don't have answers."

Alex was quiet for a moment. "That's actually really profound." He shifted. "My friends were giving me crap earlier. Called me a drama **bear** because I wouldn't shotgun a beer with them."

"Drama bear?" Maya laughed. "That's terrible."

"Right? But like... I don't drink. My dad's an alcoholic, and I just –" He stopped, looking away. "Whatever. Sorry, overshare."

"No, it's not overshare. It's real." Maya stepped closer. "You don't have to explain yourself to anyone."

Alex met her eyes. "Thanks. And hey, for what it's worth? I think you're brave. Coming down here, facing whatever you're dealing with? That takes guts. You're literally taking the **bull** by the horns."

Maya smiled, really smiled, for the first time all night. "Maybe. Or maybe I'm just hiding in a basement with a cat."

"Well," Alex said, grinning, "the basement's not so bad. Could be worse company." He held up the cable. "Wanna hear what I've been working on? It's not finished, but –"

"Yes," Maya said. "Absolutely."

And just like that, the night didn't feel so scary anymore.
