The Riddle in Her Pocket

The terminal air tasted like recycled coffee and desperation. Maya clutched her iPhone like a lifeline, her thumb hovering over his number for the thousandth time. Three years of messages, photos, inside jokes—all reduced to silent bubbles on a screen that had stopped lighting up with his name weeks ago.

A sphinx of ambiguity, that's what he'd been. Not the mythical creature with lion's body and human head, but something far more modern: a man who spoke in emotional riddles. "I need space" could mean I need space to breathe, or I need space away from you. His silence was another riddle entirely—one she'd been trying to solve since that Tuesday in October when he'd packed a single suitcase and walked out.

She couldn't bear it anymore. The weight of not knowing. The limbo between hope and grief. Every morning she woke reaching for him, and every night she slept on her side of the bed, leaving his side pristine, undisturbed, like a shrine to a ghost who hadn't had the decency to die.

The airport interarchy announced her flight. One more departure in a life full of them. She was going home for the first time since the breakup. Back to where her mother would look at her with those eyes that saw everything, would ask the questions Maya couldn't answer herself.

Her thumb finally pressed the screen. Not to call him, but to delete the thread. Two thousand, three hundred forty-seven messages vanished. The sphinx had no riddles left to offer. Only silence, honest and complete.

A man across the gate met her eyes. He looked, for a moment, like someone who understood the weight of things carried and things left behind. Maya exhaled, something in her chest loosening. She wasn't solving anything today. But she wasn't running anymore either.
