The Riddle by the Pool

The Mediterranean sun was already punishing at eight in the morning, but Elena welcomed the heat. She needed it to feel something, anything other than the numbness that had settled in her chest since yesterday afternoon.

She lowered herself into the infinity pool, the cool water shocking her skin. Swimming had always been her meditation—her version of therapy she didn't have to pay for. Back and forth, lap after lap, the rhythmic stroke and breath drowning out everything else. But today, even the water couldn't wash away what she'd seen.

Richard's phone had buzzed on the nightstand. A text from Sophie: "Can't wait for the padel tournament next week. Same hotel room as last time?"

Elena had stopped swimming mid-lap, water dripping from her face as she stared at the screen. The sphinx would have been proud of that riddle—simple on the surface, but underneath, a labyrinth of betrayal.

Now she watched from the pool edge as Richard played padel on the court below, his movements precise, his laugh genuine as he high-fived his opponent. He looked like a man without secrets. Elena's chest tightened. She thought of Buster, her childhood dog, who'd waited by the door every day for her father to come home from work, even the days he never came back at all. Loyalty was a cruel instinct sometimes.

"Elena! You coming to play?" Richard called up, cupping his hands around his mouth.

She forced a smile. "In a bit!"

The truth sat heavy in her throat like swallowed stones. She could confront him—demand answers, scream, cry. Or she could become like the sphinx herself: silent, enigmatic, watching life pass while holding a secret that could unravel everything.

She pulled herself from the pool, water streaming down her body, and wondered which version of herself would surface by dinner time. The woman who demanded truth, or the one who learned to live comfortably inside the riddle.
