The Riddle by the Court
The Mediterranean sun pressed against Elena's back as she gripped the padel racket, its handle slick with perspiration. Across the net, Marcus served with practiced precision, the ball ricocheting off the back wall—a sharp crack that echoed like the arguments they'd been having all week.
They'd come to this Greek island resort to save their marriage, or at least determine if it was worth saving. So far, they'd mostly succeeded in exhausting themselves with activities, avoiding the silence that would force them to confront what had been growing between them for months: not anger, but something far worse—indifference.
After the match, they walked in silence to the infinity pool, where **water** cascaded over the edge, disappearing into the sea below. Elena dipped her feet in, watching the ripples distort her reflection. 'My mother called yesterday,' she said finally. 'She asked why we haven't set a date.'
Marcus stared at a **sphinx** statue positioned at the pool's edge, its weathered limestone face missing its nose, its riddle worn away by centuries of sun and salt. 'What did you tell her?'
'That we're figuring things out. What else could I say?' She turned to face him. 'Marcus, do you even want this anymore? Or are we just playing out the match because neither of us wants to be the one to walk off the court first?'
He laughed, a dry humorless sound. 'That's rich coming from you. You're the one who planned this whole trip—scheduled activities like they could fix what's broken between us.' He gestured toward the padel courts. 'Even our hobbies feel orchestrated now.'
The sphinx seemed to smile knowingly at them both, its ancient stone lips holding secrets from a thousand failed relationships before theirs. Some riddles had no answers—only the asking mattered.
Elena stood, water dripping from her ankles. 'I'm going to pack.' She didn't look back at him or the statue or the beautiful, useless pool. 'Some games are better forfeited than played to completion.'
Marcus watched her go, and for the first time in their ten years together, he didn't follow.
