The Riddle Between Us

Elena stood in the kitchen, staring at the papaya she'd cut for breakfast. Its orange flesh glistened in the morning light, seeds like tiny black secrets she couldn't bring herself to scoop out. The apartment was too quiet now that Mark had left—his things gone like he'd been erased from their life together.

A spinach leaf clung to her blouse, a remnant of dinner alone last night. She'd tried to cook healthy, eat right, pretend her world wasn't unraveling. But the cable bill on the counter—still in both their names—reminded her that some connections don't sever cleanly.

Their cat, Sphinx, wound around her legs, purring desperately. Mark had named the creature for its inscrutable amber eyes, for the way it watched them argue in silence from the highest shelf. "Like the riddle itself," he'd said, "always watching, never solving."

The riddle wasn't why he left. She knew why. The riddle was why she stayed this long, why she kept buying papayas because he loved them, why she couldn't bring herself to call the cable company and disconnect a service they'd bundled together like their intertwined futures.

Sphinx jumped onto the counter and sniffed the fruit. Elena watched the cat's delicate hesitation, the way it approached everything with caution and grace. Maybe that was the answer—the riddle solved not by choosing but by approaching slowly, deliberately. Not by cutting deeper into the wound but by letting it scar over.

She scooped the seeds out at last, threw them away, and ate the papaya standing in her quiet kitchen. Alone, but for the first time in three years, not lonely.
