The Riddle at the Summit

Elena stood at the floor-to-ceiling window of her corner office, watching the city lights flicker like dying stars. At forty-two, she'd reached the pinnacle of the corporate pyramid—VP of Marketing, corner office, six-figure salary. The view should have felt like victory. Instead, it felt like standing on the edge of a cliff.

"You're not celebrating," Marcus said, sliding into the room with that predatory grin that had earned him the nickname 'the fox' around the office. He'd been her competition for the C-suite promotion, her friend for fifteen years, and her lover for exactly three drunken nights six months ago.

"I'm reflecting," she said, refusing to turn around.

"The sphinx speaks in riddles again." His warm breath was against her neck now. "Always has. That's why I never know if you want me to stay or go."

She turned to face him. Marcus with his carefully tailored suits and his carefully calculated charm. He'd played the game perfectly, just as she had. But somewhere along the way, the game had become the only thing that mattered.

"I got the promotion, Marcus. That's what we wanted."

"Did we?" He leaned against her desk, suddenly tired. "Or was that what the pyramid wanted?"

The question hung between them, heavier than the unspoken history, heavier than the promotion itself. For a decade, they'd climbed together, stepping over others, making compromises, trading pieces of themselves for the next rung up.

Elena looked at the carpet—a million threads woven into something that looked like luxury but felt like obligation. "I don't know who I'd be without this climb."

Marcus's laugh was soft, bitter. "The riddle, my sphinx, is that we built the pyramid and then forgot how to live anywhere else."

He walked to the door, stopped with his hand on the frame. "I'm not taking the Senior VP position. I'm leaving."

The silence stretched until it snapped something inside her.

"Take me with you," she said.

For the first time, the fox's grin was genuine. "I thought you'd never ask."

Somewhere below them, the city kept burning. But here, at the summit of everything she'd worked for, Elena finally understood what it meant to choose something real.
