The Rainbow Whiskers of Courage
Lily sat on the bench behind the baseball field, her chin in her hands. The team was warming up, and she was supposed to be up to bat soon. But her stomach felt like a bag of butterflies.
"I can't do it," she whispered. "I'm going to strike out again."
Suddenly, something soft brushed against her leg. Lily looked down and gasped. A small cat sat there—but this wasn't an ordinary cat. Its fur shimmered like spun silk in every color of the rainbow. The cat's whiskers twinkled like tiny stars.
"Hello, Lily," the cat said. "My name is Whiskers. I couldn't help but notice you're worried about baseball."
Lily's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"
"I can do many things," Whiskers purred, and strands of rainbow fur floated around her like magical confetti. "I know what you need, Lily. You need a very special vitamin."
"A vitamin?" Lily asked.
"Yes—the courage vitamin!" Whiskers hopped onto the bench beside her. "But here's the secret: you already have it inside you. It's called believing in yourself. Even when you're scared, especially when you're scared, that's when courage grows strongest."
Lily looked at the magical cat. "Really? But I'm not brave like other kids."
Whiskers rubbed her head against Lily's hand, and her rainbow fur glowed warmer. "Bravery isn't about not being scared. Bravery is doing something even though you ARE scared. Every time you try, even if you fail, you're being brave. That's the truth."
Lily took a deep breath. She watched her teammates laughing and running. The baseball diamond gleamed in the sun. Her heart still beat fast, but something else was there too—a tiny spark.
"Thank you, Whiskers," she said, giving the magical cat a gentle pat.
"Go show them what you've got," Whiskers meowed. "And remember—I'll be cheering for you!"
Lily stood up, picked up her bat, and walked toward home plate. She was still nervous, but now she knew something wonderful: being scared didn't mean she couldn't be brave too.
As she stepped to the plate, Lily spotted a flash of rainbow near the fence. Whiskers was there, tail held high, watching her friend shine.
Lily smiled, gripped the bat, and faced the pitcher with a heart full of courage.
