The Rainbow Hair and the Water Sprite
Lily had the most extraordinary hair in the entire village of Willowbrook. Every morning, she woke to find it a different color—sometimes pink like cotton candy, sometimes blue like the summer sky, and sometimes gold like sunshine. Her mama said it was magic, but Lily just thought it was wonderfully strange.
One hot afternoon, Lily sat by the whispering creek, dipping her toes in the cool water. Her hair was purple today, swirling around her shoulders like grape soda. Suddenly, she saw something glimmer beneath the surface.
"Hello?" she called softly.
A tiny face popped up! It was a water sprite, no bigger than a teacup, with skin that sparkled like diamonds and hair made of flowing river foam.
"You have magic hair," the sprite squeaked in a voice like babbling brooks. "I'm Splash! Will you be my friend?"
Lily's eyes grew wide. "A real water sprite! Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!"
Every day that summer, Lily visited Splash at the creek. They played hide-and-seek among the river rocks, had splash contests, and Splash taught Lily to skip stones so perfectly they bounced seven times. In return, Lily braided flowers into Splash's foam hair and told stories about the world above the water.
But when autumn came, the creek began to dry up. Splash grew weaker each day.
"The water is leaving," Splash whispered sadly. "I must follow it downstream to the big river."
Lily's heart squeezed tight. She couldn't lose her first real friend. Then she had an idea!
She dug a small path from the deeper part of the creek to Splash's pool, using her hands like a tiny shovel. Water trickled through, filling the pool again.
"Thank you!" Splash cheered, splashing happily. "You saved me!"
Lily smiled, her magical hair turning warm orange like autumn leaves. She realized something important: true friends don't just play together—they help each other, even when it's hard work.
And every day after school, Lily still visited her best friend at the creek, where the water sparkled and their friendship flowed like magic.
