The Rain in Her Hair

The hat sat on the hotel bed like a dead thing, black felt crushed where she'd gripped it too hard. Elena stared at it, at the veil trailing like surrender across the duvet, and thought about how everyone downstairs was probably wondering where the bride had gone.

Her phone buzzed again — Mark, no doubt, or her mother demanding to know what she was thinking, leaving him at the altar like that. As if she'd been thinking at all.

She wasn't thinking now. She was running.

The hotel corridor stretched long and empty, her heels clicking a frantic rhythm against marble. Outside, the sky had opened up, a downpour that felt like permission. Elena kicked off her shoes, grabbed fistfuls of that ridiculous white dress, and ran into the rain.

Cold water plastered her hair to her skull, expensive curls undone in seconds. She could hear Mark's voice inside her head, how he'd always said she looked beautiful with her hair down, how he'd wanted her to keep it long, how he'd wanted so many things she'd learned to give without question.

Her hair reached her shoulders when she reached the fountain at the edge of the hotel grounds, water cascading down stone tiers like something elegant and doomed. Elena stepped into the shallow basin, the dress heavy around her legs, and reached for the scissors she'd pocketed from the hotel gift shop.

The first lock fell and floated away like some pale, drowned thing. Another followed. Then another.

Her hands shook but didn't stop. She cut it all off, inch by inch, watching pieces of herself drift across the water's surface. Somewhere behind her, the hotel doors opened. She could hear her name, familiar voices, panic rising like the tide.

Elena looked at her reflection in the fountain's dark surface — hair chopped uneven and wild, dress ruined, mascara running down her cheeks. She'd never looked less like a bride. She'd never looked more like herself.

She waded to the other side and climbed out, dripping, shivering, somehow whole. The hat was still on the bed, the dress still ruined, the wedding still undone. But Elena was finally beginning.
