The Question We Never Asked

poolcatswimmingsphinxlightning

The condo pool at 2 AM, lit only by the distant lightning storm, was where Elena finally said it. We'd been swimming around each other for months—literally, in this case, doing laps while our marriage drowned in silence.

Her cat, Cairo, watched from the lounge chair like a miniature sphinx, enigmatic and judgment-free. The riddle wasn't 'what walks on four legs then two' but something far more difficult: how two people who still loved each other could become strangers in their own bed.

'The lightning's getting closer,' she said, treading water in the deep end. 'Did you notice?'

I had. I'd been counting the seconds between flash and thunder, measuring our life in intervals of electricity and sound. Three seconds. Six seconds. The distance growing.

'Remember when we used to swim out to the platform?' she asked. 'And we'd make up stories about the clouds?'

I remembered. We'd spend hours lying on that wooden raft, fingers trailing in the water, naming the shapes drifting above. Now we couldn't even name what was wrong between us.

Cairo stood, stretched, and padded to the pool's edge, tail twitching. The sphinx had decided it was time for answers. Some things, the cat seemed to say, could not remain submerged forever.

A flash of lightning illuminated the moment—the desperation in Elena's eyes, the water rippling around us, the absolute certainty that something had to break.

'I still want to make up stories with you,' I said, surprising myself. 'But not about clouds anymore.'

She swam toward me through the dark water. 'Then what?'

'The truth. Starting with why we're in this pool at 2 AM instead of sleeping.'

The thunder that followed was closer than ever, but the real storm had already begun.
