The Question We Cannot Answer

The corporate retreat was Elena's idea—something about building trust through competitive sport. Padel. Of all the ways to spend a weekend with colleagues whose careers you're secretly sabotaging, she chose a sport that sounds like padding and plays like tennis trapped in a glass box.

"You're overthinking it," Marcus said, bouncing a ball against his racket. The cat that had been wandering the courts all morning sat watching him, as if judging his technique.

"I'm not overthinking," Mara said, adjusting her ponytail. "I'm considering the strategic implications. The corporate sphinx, if you will."

Marcus laughed. "Now you're comparing team building to Egyptian mythology?"

"The sphinx asked the question that determined everything," she said. "Answer correctly, you live. Get it wrong, you're destroyed."

"We're just playing padel, Mara."

"Are we?" She met his eyes. "Because last week you told management my project timeline was unrealistic."

The silence stretched between them, heavy and water-saturated in the humidity. The cat, losing interest, wandered toward the clubhouse where Elena and David were already laughing over drinks, their heads bent together in conspiratorial intimacy that made Mara's stomach twist.

"It wasn't unrealistic," Marcus said quietly, not meeting her eyes. "It was impossible. You know it. I know it."

"Then help me fix it."

"I can't." He bounced the ball again, harder this time. "Elena made it clear. One of us gets the promotion. Not both."

The sphinx's question, Mara realized, wasn't about strategy or timelines or competence. It was simpler and more terrible: what would you sacrifice to survive?

The ball rolled toward the water hazard, silent and inevitable. She watched it go, understanding suddenly that the game had always been rigged, that loyalty in corporate America was just another word for delayed betrayal.

"Your serve," she said, and picked up her racket.
