The Pyramid Scheme Summer

Maya's summer was supposed to be chill—just hanging with the squad and vibing. But her mom was all, "You need work experience," so suddenly she's stuck at the local batting cages, aka Baseball Heaven, watching middle schoolers swing and miss at pitching machines.

Then she meets Kai at the cable desk where she's spending way too much time debating between premium packages. He's gorgeous in that way that makes your brain turn to mush, with messy hair and this effortless confidence. He invites her to this "exclusive investment opportunity" meeting, and Maya's like, absolutely, assuming it's some cool startup thing.

The meeting's in a hotel conference room that smells like desperation and cheap coffee. Some guy in a suit who's definitely not a teenager is talking about "financial freedom" and "passive income streams" and Maya slowly realizes—oh no. It's a pyramid scheme. Like, an actual multi-level marketing disaster.

She's about to bail when Kai catches her eye and gives this tiny head shake that says stay. He mouths, "Play along."

So she does, mostly because he's cute and partly because she's curious. They make fun of the whole thing later over gyros at the food court, where Maya discovers she has spinach stuck in her teeth the ENTIRE meeting. Kai laughs so hard Mountain Dew comes out his nose.

"That's why you kept giving me weird looks," she says, wanting to die.

"No, I kept giving you looks because you're hilarious," he says. "You called the guy a 'walking pyramid scheme.'"

They start spending every afternoon together—Kai's working at the cable place too, and between clueless customers asking about premium channels, they build this whole fake business plan for a startup called something ridiculous like "Pyramid Gaming." It's stupid and perfect and Maya realizes summer's not half bad.

The night before her last day, they sit on the curb outside Baseball Heaven as the automated pitching machines keep whirring in the dark.

"You ever gonna do anything with Pyramid Gaming?" Kai asks.

Maya shrugs. "Maybe. You in?"

"Obviously." He grins. "We'll figure it out."

She doesn't know if they'll actually do it, but for the first time, she's actually excited to go back to school and tell everyone about her weird summer—how she learned that sometimes the worst opportunities turn into the best stories, and that sometimes, if you're lucky, the most embarrassing moments become your favorite ones.
