The Pyramid Scheme Summer

Maya's summer was supposed to be about lifeguarding at the community pool and hanging with her best friend Kai. Instead, Kai texted her at 11 PM on a Tuesday: "Dude, you HAVE to see this. It's literally gonna change everything."

The "pyramid scheme"—though Kai called it a "multi-level marketing opportunity"—involved selling organic cat food to neighbors. Maya stared at the presentation slides in Kai's basement, where a stray cat they'd named Midnight sat watching them with judgment in her yellow eyes.

"Bro, it's not a pyramid," Kai insisted, passing Maya a smoothie that definitely had too much spinach in it. "It's about financial freedom. We're gonna be rich by senior year."

Maya agreed to one meeting. One. That's how she found herself swimming in Kai's cousin's pool at a "team building" party, surrounded by people who kept saying things like "hustle harder" and "dream big" while Midnight the cat hissed from the deck.

The weird part? Kai actually believed in it. Maya watched her friend—someone who usually scrolled right past scammy content—nodding along as some guy in a too-tight polo explained how they'd all be retired by 25.

"Are you actually serious right now?" Maya asked later, sitting on the pool edge with her legs in the water.

Kai looked away. "My parents are fighting about money again, May. I thought... I don't know. Maybe I could help."

Something tightened in Maya's chest. That's when Midnight jumped onto the lounge chair beside them, demanding attention like she hadn't just spent the evening judging everyone's life choices.

"This cat has better business sense than us," Maya said, scratching behind Midnight's ears. "Hey, remember when we built that pyramid of cans for the food drive last year?"

Kai laughed. "And it fell on Mr. Henderson?"

"Classic." Maya bumped her shoulder against Kai's. "You don't need some scheme. You're gonna figure it out. And I'll help."

Kai nodded slowly. "Yeah. Okay. Yeah."

They spent the rest of summer swimming at Maya's pool, accidentally making spinach smoothies that tasted like grass, and letting Midnight sleep on their homework. The only pyramid they built was out of precarious textbooks in Maya's room.

Sometimes your best friend needs you to call out their bs. Sometimes a stray cat chooses you. And sometimes the best moments aren't the ones you planned—they're the ones where you're just floating, watching the clouds, with your favorite person beside you.
