The Pyramid Scheme of Unspoken Things

The water in her glass rippled as Sarah's hands trembled. Across the polished mahogany table, Marcus was explaining the corporate pyramid structure—again. His eyes gleamed with that predatory enthusiasm she'd mistaken for passion three years ago, when she'd been twenty-three and desperate for someone to see her.

"You see how it cascades down?" Marcus traced invisible lines on the table. "Everyone below feeds the tier above. That's how success works."

Sarah thought about the pyramid scheme their marriage had become. She gave and gave, Marcus rose and rose, and somewhere along the way, she'd emptied herself completely.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows of their penthouse, rain blurred the city into smeary water colors. A cat—scraggly, orange, improbable at thirty stories up—sat on the ledge, staring in through the glass. Its yellow eyes held more wisdom than all the leadership books on Marcus's shelves.

"I found an apartment," Sarah said.

Marcus stopped mid-sentence. "What?"

"It's small. Five hundred square feet. But there's a cat colony in the alley behind it." She nodded toward the window. "Like that one."

He laughed, genuinely confused. "You're leaving this—this life—for what? A smaller apartment and cats?"

"For things that are real." Sarah stood up, her water glass still rippling. "For a life where I'm not someone else's foundation."

The cat on the ledge dipped its head once, then turned and leaped gracefully into the rain. Sarah watched it disappear into the gray water of the storm below. Something in her chest cracked open—wide and terrified and somehow, impossibly, whole.

"You can't just—" Marcus began, but Sarah was already walking out, leaving the pyramid, leaving the penthouse, leaving everything she'd carefully constructed over seven years to become someone she'd never met. Someone real. Someone, perhaps, who could sit in the rain and not feel the cold at all.
