The Pyramid Scheme of Surviving Junior Year

The social pyramid at Northwood High wasn't built with stone—it was constructed with who sat where at lunch, whose Instagram got verified, and who could actually afford the new iPhone without flinching.

I was operating on zombie status, surviving on three hours of sleep and an unhealthy amount of caffeine. APUSH was draining my soul, and my parents had signed me up for this stupid padel tournament because "team sports look good on college applications." Like, okay, thanks for the life advice.

"You look like you died three days ago," Marcus said as we walked to the courts. "Or maybe you're just practicing for the actual zombie apocalypse."

"Ha ha," I deadpanned. "At least zombies don't have to maintain a 3.8 GPA."

The real problem wasn't the lack of sleep though. It was Tyler—the biggest bully in our grade, who'd made it his personal mission to make my life miserable ever since I refused to let him copy my chem homework freshman year. And naturally, he was paired against us in the tournament bracket.

When Tyler smashed the ball straight at my face with zero regard for sportsmanship, something in me just… snapped. I didn't think. I just moved.

The ball hit the padel racket with a satisfying *thwack* and soared back over the net, landing perfectly in the corner. Tyler's jaw dropped. The silence on the court was deafening.

But the real victory? The water cooler near the exit. I grabbed a cup, chugging it like I'd been wandering a desert for forty years. That first taste of ice-cold water after winning the match against my personal villain—it hit different.

Maybe the social pyramid wasn't as unshakeable as I thought. Maybe I didn't have to be a zombie just trying to survive. And maybe, just maybe, padel wasn't so terrible after all.

"Not bad, zombie," Tyler muttered, actually looking slightly impressed. "Not bad."
