The Pyramid Scheme of Survival
Maya dragged herself through the hallway feeling like a straight-up zombie. Three AP classes, two exams, and college application essays due by midnight would do that to a person. Her signature black beanie — the one she refused to wash because "it's got good vibes" — was pulled low over her eyes, serving as both fashion statement and emergency sleep mask.
"You look dead," said Chloe, sliding up beside her at the lunch table. "Rough night?"
"Rough life," Maya mumbled, gesturing at the social hierarchy visible through the cafeteria doors. "Behold the pyramid. Varsity football at the apex, theater kids somewhere in the middle, and us peasant folk barely holding onto the bottom ledge."
Chloe snorted. "Dramatic much?"
"I'm literally surviving on caffeine and spite."
That's when THE INCIDENT occurred. Jason Chen, apex predator of the sophomore class, had accidentally left his prized Supreme hat on a table. Without thinking, Maya swiped it. Not to steal — just to chaos.
"What are you DOING?" Chloe hissed.
"Watch this."
Maya sauntered over, dropped the hat on Jason's head with exaggerated flourish, and deadpanned, "Your crown, my liege. The pyramid remains intact."
The entire lunch table went silent. Jason blinked. Then — miraculously — laughed.
"You're actually unhinged," he said, grinning. "I respect it."
Maya walked back to Chloe, hands trembling.
"You just challenged the pyramid," Chloe whispered, awestruck. "And SURVIVED."
"The zombie lives," Maya said, adjusting her own beat-up hat. "Sometimes the system's just waiting for someone crazy enough to not take it seriously."
"That's gonna be your college essay, isn't it?"
"Absolutely not."
