The Pyramid Scheme of Survival

The iphone buzzed against Maya's thigh at 2:47 AM, another notification from the hospital's group chat. She ignored it, staring at her reflection in the breakroom mirror—dark circles under eyes that hadn't known rest in three shifts, her scrubs stained with someone else's blood. The vending machine spinach and feta wrap sat untouched on the counter, its plastic wrapper mocking her with promises of nutrition she couldn't force herself to consume.

She'd been running on fumes and caffeine since Mark left, since he called her emotional distance 'unbearable' and walked out with his suitcase and half the furniture. Maybe he was right. Maybe she'd become something else—something that performed empathy on autopilot, that held dying hands while her own went numb, that moved through grief like a zombie, consuming loss without ever really digesting it.

The nursing hierarchy was a pyramid scheme of emotional exhaustion, and she'd bought in at the bottom rung. Each promotion promised more pay, more responsibility, more meaning. Instead, it delivered more deaths to witness, more families to comfort, more of herself whittled away with every shift.

Her phone lit up again: 'Code Blue, Room 312.'

Maya stood up, leaving the spinach wrap to wilt. This was her survival—running toward the dying while everyone else ran away. The tragedy wasn't that she'd lost Mark or that she'd forgotten how to feel. The tragedy was that she'd finally found her purpose in the one place guaranteed to destroy her, and she couldn't bring herself to walk away from either.
