The Pyramid Scheme of Regret

Maya sat on her fire escape, the rubber **cable** from her laptop stretching like a lifeline into the apartment. She'd just sent her resignation email to corporate—the email that would dismantle her position in the company's carefully constructed **pyramid** of hierarchy and false promises. Her father had always warned her about pyramid schemes, but this one had worn Italian suits and offered dental insurance.

The rain had started an hour ago, relentless sheets of **water** drumming against the metal grate where she sat with her legs drawn up. Three years of eighty-hour weeks, climbing ladders that led nowhere, optimizing metrics for shareholders she'd never meet. And now, staring at the brick wall of the neighboring building, she couldn't remember why she'd wanted to reach the top so badly.

A noise below made her lean over the railing. A soaked gray **cat**, skeletal but defiant, was picking through the dumpster, its movements precise despite the rain. Their eyes met—gold, unblinking, entirely unimpressed by her existential crisis.

"You too, huh?" Maya called down.

The cat continued its excavation, emerging with something that might have been chicken.

Maya stood up, the laptop **cable** snapping taut. She'd spent three years building someone else's empire while her own life crumbled. No more pyramids. No more climbing toward peaks that didn't exist. Just her, the rain, and a cat who knew exactly what it wanted.

She went inside, found a can of tuna she'd forgotten she owned, and carried it down to the alley. The cat watched her approach, ears swiveled forward. When Maya set the tuna down, it didn't run. It ate, and Maya stood there in the downpour, feeling the **water** plaster her hair to her face, letting herself finally be washed clean of three years of accumulated compromises.

The cat finished eating and rubbed against her ankle, purring loud enough to cut through the rain. A start, Maya thought. Not an ending.
