The Pyramid Scheme of Ninth Grade
Maya stared at the high school social **pyramid** from her lonely lunch table. At the apex: the cheerleaders with their highlighter-bright smiles and TikTok-famous ankle boots. Below them: the sports kids, theater crowd, and everyone else with actual lives. Then there was her, sitting somewhere near the basement with her Freaky Friday yogurt and a copy of "The Hobbit" for the third time.
"Psst. Maya."
She looked up to see Chloe sliding into the seat across from her. Chloe, who'd somehow cracked the middle tier of the pyramid without even trying. Chloe with the perfect curls and the effortless thrifted aesthetic.
"I need a favor," Chloe whispered. "I'm kind of... spying on someone. And I need backup."
Maya's heart did that thing where it forgot its job. "Spying? Like, for real?"
"Jordan's cheating on our bio project. I SAW him copying from the answer key during lunch. But I need proof." Chloe lowered her voice to a conspiratorial hiss. "You're in his study hall, right?"
Maya nodded, suddenly aware that she still had **spinach** stuck in her braces from her morning smoothie. She casually covered her mouth with her hand and tried to look cool. "Yeah, fourth period. What do you need me to do?"
"Just... keep your eyes open. See if he has the answer key. Maybe take a picture if you can?"
This was it. Her chance to climb the pyramid. Her in with Chloe. Maya nodded so hard her hair whipped her face.
"Consider me your personal **sphinx**," she said, then immediately wanted to die. That was the weirdest thing she'd ever said aloud. They'd just covered Egyptian mythology in World History, and apparently her brain had short-circuited.
But Chloe just laughed. "A sphinx? Okay, mysterious one. Just don't make me solve any riddles."
The rest of the day passed in a nervous blur. Maya spent fourth period trying to look anywhere except Jordan's backpack while feeling like the most obvious spy in history. Every time Jordan glanced her way, she practically short-circuited.
By the time she met Chloe at her locker after school, Maya was ready to come clean about being the world's worst secret agent.
"So?" Chloe asked, bouncing on the balls of her feet. "Did you see anything?"
Maya took a deep breath. "I couldn't do it. I felt like I was going to throw up the whole time. Also, I think there's been spinach in my teeth since second period, so I've probably been terrifying everyone."
Chloe stared at her, then burst out laughing. Not mean laughter—actual real laughter, doubled over, eyes-crinkling laughter.
"Oh my god, Maya. You're kind of amazing."
"I failed. I failed at being a spy. I'm still at the bottom of the pyramid."
"Wait." Chloe reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone, flipping to a text chain. "I wasn't trying to expose Jordan. I just wanted an excuse to talk to you. You always look like you're reading something interesting at lunch, and I've been trying to figure out how to approach you for weeks."
Maya's brain stopped working.
"You were... spying on ME?"
"Maybe. Is that weird?" Chloe bit her lip. "I can delete your number if you want."
"No!" Maya practically shouted. "I mean, no, don't delete it. I just—this is the weirdest Tuesday of my life."
"Good weird or bad weird?"
Maya thought about it. She thought about the pyramid, and the spinach, and the sphinx comment, and the spy mission that wasn't a spy mission at all.
"Good weird," she said finally. "Definitely good weird."
