The Pyramid Scheme of Friday Night
My life is basically a pyramid of awkward moments, each one built on the foundation of the last disaster.
Friday night, 9:47 PM. Jordan's party. I'm standing on the patio wearing my dad's vintage fedora because someone once said it made me look mysterious. It doesn't. It makes me look like I'm going through a phase. A phase that includes saying things like "big mood" and "no cap" unironically.
"Nice hat," Chloe says. She's the kind of pretty that makes your brain malfunction.
"Thanks," I manage. Then my brain decides to add: "It's vintage. From... the old times."
She laughs. Not the mean kind. The real kind. I'm feeling good until I spot Jordan's dog—a chaotic golden retriever named Brody—charging toward us with something in his mouth. Something orange and fuzzy.
It's the cat. Not our cat, obviously, because we don't have one. It's a stuffed animal. Chloe's stuffed animal. Brody stole it from somewhere.
"Brody, NO!" Jordan yells from inside.
The dog does a lap around the patio, orange cat toy flying like a mascot at a sports game. He trips over the cable to the outdoor speakers—Jordan spent all afternoon setting up that cable, I heard him complaining about it—and goes sliding.
The stuffed cat flies through the air and lands directly in the punch bowl.
Silence. Then laughter. Not at me, for once. At the situation. Brody shakes himself off like a drama queen. Everyone's losing it. Even Chloe, who I thought would be mad about her toy.
"That's literally the most iconic thing I've ever seen," she says. "My cat's soul has transcended."
I take off the hat. "You want it back?"
"Nah," she says. "Let it chill in the punch. It's achieved greatness."
We stand there watching orange cat float in fruit punch while someone yells about the cable being unplugged and the music dying. And I realize maybe I don't need the hat. Maybe the awkward pyramid has a top floor after all, and it's just standing next to someone laughing at the chaos instead of being the chaos.
"Wanna help me fish it out?" I ask.
She grins. "Together."
And that's how I learned that sometimes you don't find your vibe—you build it, one ridiculous moment at a time.
