The Pyramid Scheme of Everything
Maya's palms were sweating — literally, like, actual dripping — as she clutched the orange juice cup like it was a lifeline. Or a weapon. Whatever.
"You're literally blocking the entire pyramid," whispered Kai, nodding at the cafeteria's social hierarchy chart taped (illegally) to the wall. Someone had drawn it in sharpie: seniors at the top, freshmen struggling at the bottom, with and a questionably labeled "middle layer" that looked suspiciously like a food chain.
"I'm not blocking anything," Maya shot back, but her voice cracked. Again. "I'm just ... existing. Suspiciously."
Kai rolled their eyes so hard it looked painful. "You've been spying on Sasha's table for twenty minutes. It's giving creep energy, babe."
Okay, fair. Maya *had* been watching Sasha — the girl with the perfect hair and the effortless vibe and the apparently infinite collection of vintage tees — since fourth period. But "spy" was such a harsh word. Prefer: "observing from a respectful distance with mild obsession energy."
"I'm not spying," Maya insisted, even though she absolutely was. "I'm conducting research. For reasons."
"Reasons being?"
"That she's literally the only person in this school who might understand my extremely valid conern about the new gym uniforms being suspiciously similar to prison jumpsuits?"
Kai paused. "Wait, they ARE orange?"
"BRIGHT ORANGE, Kai. Like, radioactive traffic cone orange. I refuse to succumb to the prison-industrial complex of public education fashion."
"Wow." Kai stared at her. "That's... actually a valid point." They slid down the wall. "Fine. Operation Anti-Orange-Jumpsuit begins now. But we need backup."
"Backup?"
"Allies. Recruits. People who understand that some lines should NOT be crossed." Kai gestured at the social pyramid. "We start a revolution. From the bottom. It's perfectly on brand."
Maya looked at Sasha's table again. Sasha was laughing at something, head thrown back, palm tree sunlight slanting across her face through the window, and for a second — just a second — Maya felt like she was standing on top of the pyramid instead of crushed beneath it.
"Yeah," Maya said, finally. "Let's do this."
She crushed her orange juice cup. "Revolution starts NOW."
Kai grinned. "Damn straight. Pass me the Sharpie. We're editing that pyramid."
