The Pyramid Scheme of Eighth Grade

Maya stared at the text message on her cracked phone screen. It was Brianna, the undisputed queen of eighth grade, and she wanted Maya to join her "lip gloss pyramid." That's how it started—the pyramid that would eventually crash and burn spectacularly.

"Just bring five dollars to the party Friday," the text read. "You'll get in on the ground floor."

The party was at Brianna's house, and Maya's palm was sweating just thinking about it. She'd spent hours that morning getting ready, straightening her curls until they hung limp and lifeless, because that's what Brianna's crew did. But now she was questioning everything as she stood outside Brianna's front door, clutching a neon party hat that glowed under the porch light.

"Maya! Finally!" Brianna flung the door open, already wearing her own hat—bedazzled, of course, because she was Brianna. "We're doing the pyramid presentation in the basement."

The basement was packed. Every popular kid from school was there, sitting in rows on those beanbags Brianna's parents had bought when they were cool, which was approximately never. They all turned to look at Maya.

"Everyone, this is Maya," Brianna announced like she was introducing a rare species. "She's going to be our newest... recruit."

Maya's stomach dropped. This wasn't a party. This was a cult.

"So," Brianna continued, pulling out a whiteboard covered in diagrams that looked like something from a business seminar, "you each recruit five people, they recruit five people, and we ALL profit. It's simple math."

"That's literally a pyramid scheme," Maya heard herself say. The room went dead silent.

Brianna's smile didn't waver. "It's not a scheme if it's friendship, Maya."

Maya looked around the room—at the desperate hope in everyone's eyes, at the way they all leaned forward like Brianna was about to reveal the meaning of life. And suddenly she saw it: the whole social pyramid of middle school laid bare. Brianna at the top, then her lieutenants, then everyone else scrambling to climb up.

"You know what?" Maya said, setting down her ridiculous hat. "I think I'm good."

She turned and walked up the stairs, heart hammering. When she reached the front door, she heard Brianna's voice float up: "Whatever. She wasn't cool enough anyway."

Maya stepped outside into the cool night air and fished her phone from her pocket. Her group chat with her real friends—the ones who would never make her join a pyramid scheme to prove her worth—was blowing up.

"where r u??"

"we're at the park"

"bring snacks"

She smiled and started walking toward the park, already texting back: "On my way. And I've got the best story ever."

The pyramid could crash without her. She was building her own foundation now.
