The Pyramid Scheme and the Stray
Maya's senior year was supposed to be her glow-up era. Instead, she was stuck working weekends at her cousin's "life-changing" vitamin pyramid scheme, her Instagram feed filled with friends posting college acceptance letters while she barely passed pre-calc.
"You're not selling, you're sharing wellness," her cousin Jordan kept saying, adjusting his blazer despite it being eighty-five degrees. "This pyramid structure is about community elevation."
Yeah, right. Maya's "community" consisted of her grandma, who bought one bottle out of pity, and a stray cat she'd named Ghost because the white tabby appeared and disappeared like an anxiety spiral.
Then came the night of the homecoming game, when Maya was supposed to be networking with potential customers but ended up hiding behind the concession stand, overthinking everything. That's when Ghost appeared β not the cat, but Tyrell, the track star she'd been lowkey crushing on since freshman year.
"Running from the party too?" he asked, and Maya's stomach did that thing where it forgot how to exist.
"Something like that." She gestured vaguely at the gym, where Jordan was probably working his pyramid magic on innocent freshmen. "My cousin's got me selling these wellness vitamins. It's a whole situation."
Tyrell laughed. "My sister tried to get me into that last year. Said I'd be making six figures by now if I'd joined her team."
"Wait, your sister isβ"
"Yeah, same company." He shook his head. "Classic multilevel mess. But hey, at least you get paid in experience, right?"
"Experience and unwanted contact info," Maya muttered, making him laugh again.
They ended up talking for two hours about everything β college applications, fear of failure, how running track was the only time Tyrell's brain stopped overthinking. Ghost the actual cat showed up and winds between Maya's legs like she'd been part of the conversation all along.
"Cool cat," Tyrell said.
"She's my emotional support animal for pyramid scheme trauma."
"That's valid."
By the time Jordan found her, Maya had somehow accidentally acquired Tyrell's number, a new perspective on the whole "future" thing, and the realization that sometimes the worst decisions lead to exactly where you need to be. The cat, naturally, had disappeared again.
Ghost moves in mysterious ways, too.
