The Pyramid Scheme

Maya's legs burned as she rounded the track's final curve, running on pure instinct and adrenaline. Third place. Again. At Lincoln High, the social pyramid worked just like the medals podium: the popular kids at the top, everyone else crushed beneath their weight.

"Nice try, nerd," called Tyler, the bull-headed captain of the football team, high-fiving his friends by the bleachers. Maya ignored him, grabbing her backpack and heading straight to the sanctuary of her bedroom.

Her sanctuary, her kingdom, her secret empire. While her parents thought she was studying, Maya was actually "PyramidQueen," streaming puzzle games to 40,000 followers who didn't care if she wasn't cheerleading material.

But tonight, disaster struck.

The ethernet cable that her dad had promised to replace? Still frayed. One wrong move, and she'd be disconnected mid-stream, exposed as a fraud to her entire community. She performed emergency surgery with electrical tape, her hands shaking, while her chat spammed "POG" and "QUEEN SLAY."

"Maya! Dinner!" Her mom's voice cut through her headphones. She muted herself just as Tyler's message popped up on Discord: "Saw you running today. You looked... determined. Wanna hang this weekend?"

She stared at the screen. Was this another setup? More bull from the guy who'd made middle school miserable? Or something real?

"Maya?"

"Coming!" She unmuted her mic. "Hey guys, Queen's gotta eat. Be back in twenty."

Her cable held. Her community waited. And maybe—just maybe—it was time to stop running from everything that scared her. The pyramid could wait. She'd build her own kingdom instead.
