The Pyramid Scheme
Elara adjusted her fedora, the brim casting shadows across eyes that had seen too much. The corporate pyramid rose before her—a glass monument to hierarchy and greed. Inside, she was supposed to be senior analytics, not a spy.
"Nice hat," Marco murmured, sliding into the chair beside her at the dimly lit hotel bar. His fingers brushed hers, deliberate and dangerous.
"It's called a fedora," she said, not pulling away. "And we shouldn't be seen together."
"The audit isn't until Thursday," he replied, signaling the bartender. "We have time."
They were both sleeping with the enemy—literally. Marco, the consultant hired to expose embezzlement. Elara, the director whose signature appeared on every fraudulent document. The corporate pyramid scheme they'd uncovered implicated everyone, including the CEO.
"I found something," she said, sliding a cable across the table—a physical backup drive, not the fiber optic cables that usually connected them. "Everything. The shell companies, the offshore accounts. The money trail leads all the way to the top."
Marco's expression darkened. "This isn't just corporate fraud, Elara. It's treason. Some of those offshore accounts? They're not hiding money from the IRS. They're hiding payments to foreign governments."
The weight of it settled between them like the cat that had appeared at Elara's apartment window three nights ago—stray, watchful, impossible to ignore.
"What do we do?" she asked, though she already knew.
"We blow it open," Marco said. "Together."
"And us?"
He hesitated. "After."
The glass pyramid reflected the city lights—a tomb, she realized, for everyone who'd tried to do the right thing. But not tonight. Tonight, they had each other, and they had the truth.
Elara finished her drink and adjusted her hat again. Some pyramids were built to last. Others were meant to be torn down, brick by corrupted brick, until the foundation cracked and the truth came tumbling out.
